Memorial Day weekend was big one for Disney California Adventure. Saturday, May 27, was not only the kickoff of the Marvel-centric “Summer of Heroes”, but also the official public opening of the much-anticipated
new attraction re-themed ride, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout.
Admittedly, I was not there for the inaugural weekend and its five-hour to seven-hour wait time. I made my way onto the attraction on Monday, two days after the opening, and wait times were down to about two hours at night. A two-hour wait time is considerably short for an attraction that has been open for three days, especially on Memorial Day. Is it a good sign for the ride’s popularity? Not sure about that. More surprisingly, the wait time was just one hour when I visited again on Friday, at 4:00 PM. However, it’s worth noting that all six elevators (two in each shaft) were running, so that helps a bit.
In any event, I was happy to ride the attraction, and I had a blast. I won’t lie, I miss the timeless class and elegance of Tower of Terror, and I am still not totally at peace with this re-theming. That being said, the ride is super fun, and uplifting (not a pun, it’s really literally upbeat). I will miss the eerie aura of mystery and spooky storyline of Tower of Terror, but this overhaul is definitely a party.
